Today was mainly about experimenting with screen printing. After tracing my parcel image a few times I decided to choose one of the images on the acetape which i had overlayed. After attaching that to the screen i used the screen exposure unit for 170 seconds in order for the image on the acetate to develop onto the screen.

When applying the ink to the screen i struggled to get the amount right when creating a background and often ended up with too much for fear of not having enough! My favourite prints were thoose that were just printed straight onto white paper as i felt that they were more crisp and stood out better.

Today I wanted to try and create and explore creating more ‘voids’ and a feeling of empty/loneliness within the painting. It will be interesting once the paint has dried to photocopy it and reverse the colours.I have tried to predict how this will turn out loosley by where I have placed the colours but I’m willing to accept that they may not turn out the way I planned.

Today I photocopied some of my latest works and reversed the colours. Although I was impressed with the outcome of some of the photocopies I started to feel like I had lost my way a little and hit a bit of a wall. After having a discussion with the tutor and artist in residence they talked about how my work had developed a alot since the word ‘eviction’ and that due to the nature of the 2D work taking on almost a look of 3D work in the photocopies due to the dark background beside the swirl of galaxy like colours there was a feeling of a ‘void’ which could link with the emotions brought by homelessness. Tomorrow i hope to create further pieces inspired by this aspect and take it further forward.

Encouraged by my tutor i stripped work off my wall that wasn’t working and kept up those that were which really helped my vision in moving forward.

Mark Rothko-‘Black blue painting’ I Felt like this work related to some of my pieces where I had photocopied the emulsion with ink on it and reversed the colours.Rothko’s abstract work also has a feeling of a kind of ‘void’ about it which is very prominent in his darker painitng’s such as this one.I feel that some of my 2D work such as the tissue paper on ink and the emulsion piece have a feeling of being 3D even tho they are 2D which echoes alot of what Rothko’s pieces do.

Today i experimented further with mixed media,I questioned things such as what is a home?I also thought about the control and power a landlord/council have to be able to make someone leave somewhere they consider home all of a sudden and the feeling that comes with that which i displayed using an array of blues/blacks and browns and seeping black ink into tissue/masking tape to show how mental illness slowly takes over.I aso used the image of a tent wich i first discovered from a newspaper article during the day today project in the first week along with drawing the imageof one if the parcels i made in week two which represents people being sent away.I also think more care is taken of parcels then human beings.

I found my collage to be the most sucessful piece but also the most colourful.I’m not sure if these are the right colours for this theme and may try to create something similar using more muted colours.

I also think the photocopied ‘postive to negative’ prints worked out pretty well but i still need to explore other options on the photocopier.

I also thought about how the homeless are considered as invisable and kind of washed out by society by white washing over tissue etc.

Today i stretched my paper then primed it with Emulsion paint before exploring a variety of mark making in reference to the theme of ‘eviction’ which I had taken from one of my day today projects in the first week.I felt like there was alot of emotions that can be explored through this word which relate to certain colours.I mainly used ink and bleach today along with some coloured ink.I particulary enjoyed how varied the final result could be whilst using ink and bleach and unpredictable.I also primed wood and cardboard and used the image of a fading tent on one piece which came from one of the newspaper clippings linked about eviction.I wanted it to represent how people that are evicted are seen as invisable by landlords as they don’t really consider them as humans with feelings or how this may effect them.Along with the image of one of the parcels i had created. As i feel like families are sometimes treated like parcels when evicted and sent to a different area with no consideration to how fragile this may make them feel on the inside.Especially children.

#daytoday part2 Reflection.

Looking back on this weeks work and having discussed it with fellow classmates and tutors during my crit I came to realise alot of things upon my own reflections and from the critisms of others.Firstly,I am glad that I took the risk and re-explored the word rebels as it taught me to be less attached to my work and more open to different avenues appearing.I feel that re-approaching the word ‘rebels’ for the 2nd time the approach was more obvious using cowboys/bandits and influences of ‘Punk’ era but one criticism I did face was ‘were Cowboys actually rebels?’And that maybe I should of focused more on southern rebels and outlaws. Another suggestion was that maybe i should of focused on rebellion in today’s era because in an age of comformity what is rebellion? And that maybe I should of focused on the politicians of today who are rebelling against the political system.Does this make them the rebels of todays society?I feel that i should of spent more time developing and reckonising elements of the cowboys piece that needed changed as it was pointed out to me that the cowboys worked well without being placed into a ‘scene’ with the poster behind them.I experimented with this and noticed the difference immediately.Visually I think the first part of my project worked better but only because more development was put into it.I also found it more aesthetically pleasing due to this. Therefore I would say that this was the more sucessful part of the project altho i hold no regrets over ‘risk taking’ and reigning the project back in to it’s original title. But it would still be interesting to see where the ‘creature like’aspect of the parcels would of gone had I not.

In these videos I play about with the use of the lasso.Given more time I would like to of played about with the composition of the cowboys and the lasso. The quality of the video isn’t the best and I would proberly consider using the tripod next time I film it.

#theoryand context Identity

After visting the cindy Sherman exhibition at Stills gallery,I viewed some of her early work entitled (untitled) ‘murder mystery people’ which displays a range of characters that Sherman explores in a construction of contemporary identity. She photographs herself as a range of different characters in a murder mystery. And uses make-up and costuming to create such characters. She also explores the glamour of celebrities of that time and plays a role where the paprazzi are following her or shooting photo’s of her discreetly in public.

She also features in a short video where her identity is choosen by someone else using doll style paper tab clothing. So prehaps her perception on identity which is forced by parents or society around one’s self.

#daytoday part 2

Today i had a change of heart and decided that instead of following the route I was currently on that I would re-focus on the words ‘rebel’ and ‘riot’I started to think of olden day ‘rebels’ and discovered some old magazines of bandits and cowbots.I then decided to use the contrast of modern day rebels with the olden day bandits/sherriffs.When creating the mixed media piece I used a brick to create the background texture as i felt that this was important as it tied in with ‘hooded youths rebelling/rioting during protests’ i also felt that it was important to use orange and red to create a feeling of rage/warning.I then stuck the cut out bandits/sherrifs to the bricks as i felt that this connected the old way of rebelling to the new.

In comparison to the last 2 days i felt like i could of pushed the development further.Especially the texture the cowboys are stood on.I felt like i should of considered this more and the composition Because of this I personally don’t think this is the strongest piece.I think the parcels i made yesterday were alot stronger due to the fact i played about with alot of different compositions.
